The nuthatch owes its name to its innate ability to glue the entrance to its nesting cavity with clay to the right size, and the blue-orange nuthatch climbs up and down the tree. The water rail is also affectionately known as the "reed pig", as its entire sound repertoire is more reminiscent of a pig than a water bird. Shy and secretive, they mainly move around in the dense shoreline vegetation and communicate by calling. They are masters of hiding. In winter, they sometimes emerge from the protective vegetation. In case of danger, they fly up quickly, only to disappear into the thicket again immediately afterwards. They like to eat worms, insects, spiders and occasionally also small fish, frogs and [...]
Its dazzling coloration, secretive lifestyle and rarity have made the kingfisher famous. The upper plumage of the male usually has a blue base tone with large and numerous azure-blue spots on the top of the head, while the female is more blue-green on the upper side. The beak of the female is reddish-brown underneath. The young birds have dark brown colored feet on the upper side. The plumage is duller and the upper side is greener than in adult birds.
The dipper is the only native songbird that can dive and swim! Its diet consists mainly of small aquatic animals such as caddis fly larvae, amphipods and snails. From time to time they even catch small fish. The parents feed the young, which can swim before they are able to fly.
The Mandarin duck drake is particularly easy to recognize thanks to its magnificent and colourful plumage: it has a green-metallic crest, a chestnut-brown whisker and a very conspicuous white stripe above its eyes. The orange and large wing feathers are set up like sails and the head looks relatively large.
The goldfinch is the most colorful of the native finch species: it has a red face mask framed in white on the head and sides of the neck, a white rump and a broad yellow band that runs across the black wings. The strong seed-eating beak is long and pointed. This is particularly suitable for picking out seeds.

🇩🇪 Am frühen Morgen, kurz vor Sonnenaufgang mit dem Gesang des Langschwanz-Seidenschnäpper aufzuwachen, ist speziell schön. Er hier auf dem Bild, lies sich gleich von meiner kleinen Terrasse aus Fotogarfieren. Er hüpfte flink im Busch umher, begutachtete mich mit meiner Kamera und präsentierte sich wie ein Model von seiner besten Seite. 🇩🇪 Beim Azurnaschvogel Weibchen ist die Rückenseite grünlich gefärbt. Der Kopfbereich ist ebenfalls grünlich gefärbt, weist jedoch einen bläulichen Schimmer auf. An den Halsseiten kann sich ein leicht hellbrauner Schimmer zeigen. Ventral ist das Gefieder bläulich gefärbt. Jungvögel ähneln im Wesentlichen dem Weibchen, wobei sie aber im Bereich des Kopfes und der Brust einen höheren Blauanteil aufweisen.
🇬🇧 The dorsal side of the female Shining Honeycreeper is greenish in color. The head area is also greenish in color, but has a bluish tinge. There may be a light brown tinge on the sides of the neck. Ventrally, the plumage is bluish in color. Young birds are essentially similar to females, although they have a higher proportion of blue in the head and breast area.

🇩🇪 Der Azurnaschvogel erreicht eine Körperlänge von bis zu 10 cm und wird ca. 10 Gramm schwer. Die Geschlechter unterscheidet man am leichtesten an der Gefiederfärbung. Das Gefieder des Männchens ist lila gefärbt, mitunter mit einem bläulichen Einschlag. Die Flügel, der Halsbereich, der Schwanz sowie das Gesichtsfeld zwischen den Augen und dem Schnabelansatz sind schwarz gefärbt.
🇬🇧 The Shining Honeycreeper reaches a body length of up to 10 cm and weighs around 10 grams. The sexes are most easily distinguished by their plumage coloration. The male`s plumage is purple, sometimes with a bluish tinge. The wings, the neck area, the tail and the facial area between the eyes and the base of the beak are black.

🇩🇪 Den Grossteil des Tages verbringt der Tuberkelhokko mit der Nahrungssuche. Er frisst frische Pflanzentriebe, Früchte, Samen, Nüsse und gelegentlich auch Insekten und kleinere Wirbeltiere wie Geckos und Leguane. Um die harte Pflanzennahrung besser zu verdauen, verschluckt er kleinere Steine (Gastrolithen).
🇬🇧 The Great Curassow spends most of the day looking for food. It eats fresh plant shoots, fruits, seeds, nuts and occasionally insects and smaller vertebrates such as geckos and iguanas. In order to digest the hard plant food better, it swallows small stones (gastroliths).

🇩🇪 Das Orangekehlelfen Weibchen ist deutlich weniger bunt. Es besitzt eine weisse Kehle und an der Kopfunterseite eine weisse Färbung mit schwarzen Punkten. Die natürlichen Feinde der Orangekehlelfen sind Schlangen, Katzen und Greifvögel. Der Gesamtbestand dieser Art wird derzeit nicht als bedroht angesehen.
🇬🇧 The Scintillant Hummingbird female is much less colorful. It has a white throat and a white coloration with black spots on the underside of the head. The natural enemies of the orange-throated hummingbird are snakes, cats and birds of prey. The overall population of this species is not currently considered endangered.

🇩🇪 Die Goldscheiteltangare ist ein mittelgrosser Sperlingsvogel. Erwachsene Vögel werden bis 13 cm lang und wiegen 19 g. Das erwachsene Männchen hat einen goldenen Kopf mit einer schwarzen Augenmaske, die oben und unten violettblau eingefasst ist. Die Oberseite des Körpers ist schwarz, abgesehen von den türkisfarbenen Schultern, dem Bürzel und den Rändern der Flügel und des Schwanzes.
🇬🇧 The Golden-hooded Tanager is a medium-sized passerine bird. Adult Golden-hooded Tanagers are 13 cm long and weigh 19 g. The adult male has a golden head with a black eye mask that is edged in violet-blue above and below. The upper side of the body is black, apart from the turquoise shoulders, rump and the edges of the wings and tail.

🇩🇪 Tief im Herzen der Bergwälder von Costa Rica taucht eine winzige, durchsichtige Gestalt auf - der Geisterglasfrosch. Er erreicht eine Körpergrösse von 27-34mm. Dieser Frosch ist nachtaktiv. Tagsüber hockt er auf der Oberseite eines Blattes und passt seine Farbe dem Hintergrund an.
🇬🇧 Deep in the heart of the mountain forests of Costa Rica, a tiny, translucent creature emerges - the Ghost Glass Frog. It reaches a body size of 27-34mm. This frog is nocturnal. During the day, it crouches on the top of a leaf and adapts its color to the background.

🇩🇪 Die Färbung der Geschlechter dieser Art unterscheidet sich sehr stark voneinander. Das Tuberkelhokkos Weibchen ist etwas kleiner als das Männchen. Es ist meist braun, es sind aber auch rote, rosa, schwarze oder zweifarbige Morphen des Federkleides bekannt. Der Hals ist grau weiss gesprenkelt wie der Schopf auf dem schwarzweissen Kopf. Der Schwanz des Weibchens ist weiss, schwarz und braun gesprenkelt. Die hintere Zehe ist bei den Tuberkelhokkos deutlich länger als bei anderen Hühnervögeln und ermöglicht einen besseren Halt im Geäst der Bäume.
🇬🇧 The coloration of the sexes of this species differs greatly from one another. The female Great Curassow is somewhat smaller than the male. It is usually brown, but red, pink, black or bicolored morphs of the plumage are also known. The neck is speckled gray and white like the crest on the black and white head. 🇩🇪 Der Rabengeier hat eine Körperlänge von 56 bis 74 cm, eine Flügelspannweite von 133 bis 160 cm und ist 1,1 bis 1,9 kg schwer. Sein Gefieder ist glänzend schwarz, Kopf und Hals sind nackt. Er hat sehr breite, verhältnismässig kurze Flügel und einen kurzen Schwanz. Im Stehen reichen die Spitzen der zusammengelegten Flügel bis zur Schwanzspitze. Die Beine und der Schnabel sind grau, die Iris dunkel.
🇬🇧 The Black Vulture has a body length of 56 to 74 cm, a wingspan of 133 to 160 cm and weighs 1.1 to 1.9 kg. Its plumage is glossy black, its head and neck are bare. It has very broad, relatively short wings and a short tail. When standing, the tips of the folded wings reach the tip of the tail. The legs and beak are gray, the iris dark.

🇩🇪 Anders als die Falken (Gattung Falco) ist der Schopfkarakara kein schnell fliegender Jäger, sondern verbringt viel Zeit am Boden. Mit seinen langen Beinen und Zehen ist er gut ans Laufen in offenen Lebensräumen angepasst. Zur Beute gehören Wirbellose, Reptilien, Amphibien, sowie gelegentlich kleine Vögel und Säugetiere.
🇬🇧 The Crested Caracara is 54 to 66 cm long and reaches a wingspan of 108 to 144 cm. Unlike falcons, the Crested Caracara is not a fast-flying hunter, but spends a lot of time on the ground. With its long legs and toes, it is well adapted to running in open habitats.

🇩🇪 Der Langschwanz-Seidenschnäpper ist ein Sperlingsvogel , der nur in den Bergen Costa Ricas und West Panamas vorkommt. Er lebt normalerweise in einer Höhe von 1.850 MüM bis zur Baumgrenze. Seine Grösse entspricht in etwa der einer Drossel bei einem Gewicht von etwa 37g. Langschwanz-Seidenschnäpper sind mit den Seidenschwänzen verwandt und haben wie diese ein weiches, seidiges Gefieder.
🇬🇧 The Long-tailed Silky-flycatcher is a passerine bird that only occurs in the mountains of Costa Rica and western Panama. It normally lives at an altitude of 1,850 meters above sea level up to the tree line. It is about the same size as a thrush and weighs around 37g. Long-tailed Silky-flycatchers are related to the waxwings and, like them, have soft, silky plumage.

🇩🇪 Königsgeier sind auffällig gefärbt. Ihr nackter Kopf ist am Scheitel, Hals sowie um die Augen herum rot, die Schnabelwarzen und der Nacken orange bis gelb. An den Wangen befinden sich kurze, gräulichweisse Federn, während der untere Teil des Halses schwarz ist. Die Vorderseite ist weissgrau.
🇬🇧 King vultures are strikingly colored. Their bare head is red on the crown, neck and around the eyes, while the beak warts and neck are orange to yellow. There are short, grayish-white feathers on the cheeks, while the lower part of the neck is black. The front is white-grey.

🇩🇪 Die Färbung der Geschlechter der Tuberkelhokkos unterscheidet sich sehr stark voneinander. Das Männchen hat ein fast völlig schwarzes Körpergefieder, nur der Bauch ist weiss. Die wulstigste Wachshaut (Tuberkel) auf dem Schnabel und der Schnabel selbst sind gelb. Die langen Beine und der Schwanz sind ebenfalls schwarz. Mit einer Länge von 78–100 cm und einem Gewicht von 3,1–4,8 Kg ist dies ein grosser Vogel.

🇩🇪 Das Gefieder des 23 cm langen Gelbstirn-Blatthühnchens ist am Kopf und Hals schwarz, an den Flügeloberseiten und am Rücken dunkelrotbraun und an den Flügelunterseiten blassgrün oder gelb. Der Schnabel und der weiche, fleischige Stirnschild sind gelb und die Beine und langen Zehen gefärbt. Im Flug sind die leuchtend gelben Flecken an der Flügelunterseite zu sehen.
🇬🇧 The plumage of the 23 cm long Northern Jacana is black on the head and neck, dark reddish-brown on the upper wing surfaces and back and pale green or yellow on the undersides of the wings. The bill and the soft, fleshy forehead shield are yellow and the legs and long toes are colored yellow. The bright yellow spots on the underside of the wings are visible in flight.

Die Bluttangare bewohnt das Blätterdach feuchter Bergwälder und grosse Bäume in nicht bewaldeten Gebieten wie Weiden, Kaffeeplantagen und Gärten.

🇩🇪 Die Greifschwanz-Lanzenotter lebt auf Bäumen im Flachland und in den Bergen, in feuchten Regenwäldern und Plantagen. Sie ernährt sich von kleinen Vögeln, Echsen, Mäusen und Fröschen. Die Greifschwanz-Lanzenotter ist stark giftig, warnt vor dem Giftbiss nicht und stösst auf Entfernungen bis zu einer halben Körperlänge zu. Greifschwanz-Lanzenottern werden 60, manchmal auch knapp über 80 cm lang.
🇬🇧 The Bothriechis Schlegelii lives in trees in the lowlands and mountains, in humid rainforests and plantations. It feeds on small birds, lizards, mice and frogs. The Bothriechis Schlegelii is highly venomous, does not warn of its venomous bite and strikes at distances of up to half a body length. Prehensile-tailed lance adders grow to a length of 60, sometimes just over 80 cm.

🇩🇪 Der Glitzerbrillantkolibri erreicht eine Körperlänge von etwa 13 cm bei einem Gewicht der Männchen von ca. 10g und der Weibchen von ca. 8,5 g. Der Glitzerbrillantkolibri bewegt sich in bergigen Eichenwäldern und ist da am häufigsten an deren Rändern unterwegs. Ebenso sieht man ihn in lichten Baumkronen und der angrenzenden Sekundärvegetation. In Costa Rica kommt er in der Cordillera Central und in der Cordillera de Talamanca vor.
🇬🇧 The Talamanca Hummingbird reaches a body length of about 13 cm with a weight of about 10 g for males and about 8.5 g for females. The glittering hummingbird moves in mountainous oak forests and is most often seen at their edges. It can also be seen in sparse treetops and the adjacent secondary vegetation. In Costa Rica, it is found in the Cordillera Central and the Cordillera de Talamanca.
