🇩🇪 Der 40 bis 49 cm lange Rallenreiher erreicht bei einer Flügelspannweite von 71 bis 80 cm ein Gewicht von 250 bis 300 g. Am Boden erscheint das Gefieder des dickhalsigen Vogels unscheinbar ocker-gelb-bräunlich gefärbt. Im Schlichtkleid weist der Rallenreiher an Kopf- und Halsseiten eine deutliche Strichelung, einen matt ockerbraunen Mantel sowie grüngelbliche Beine und Schnabel auf, letzteren mit dunklerer Spitze.
🇬🇧 The 40 to 49 cm long squacco heron reaches a weight of 250 to 300 g with a wingspan of 71 to 80 cm. On the ground, the plumage of the thick-necked bird appears inconspicuously ochre-yellow-brownish in colour. In its plain plumage, the squacco heron has distinct streaking on the sides of its head and neck, a matt ochre-brown mantle and greenish-yellow legs and bill, the latter with a darker tip.

🇩🇪 Der Sperlingskauz ist ein erfolgreicher Kleinvogeljäger. Sein Nahrungsspektrum ist sehr gross und umfasst insgesamt über 50 Vogelarten bis Buntspechtgrösse. Häufig werden Buchfinken und Tannenmeisen erbeutet. Zuweilen erjagt der Sperlingskauz auch Ästlinge der eigenen Art. Des Weiteren gehören zu seinen Beutetieren Säugetiere wie zum Beispiel Spitzmäuse, Ratten, Erdmäuse, Rötelmäuse und Bilche, Amphibien und Reptilien. Der Anteil der Vogelbeute ist unterschiedlich, übersteigt aber selten 50 Prozent.
🇬🇧 The pygmy owl is a successful hunter of small birds. Its food spectrum is very wide and includes over 50 bird species up to the size of great spotted woodpeckers. It often preys on chaffinches and coal tits. Occasionally, the pygmy owl also hunts branches of its own species. Other prey include mammals such as shrews, rats, voles, bank voles and dormice, amphibians and reptiles. The proportion of bird prey varies, but rarely exceeds 50%.

🇩🇪 Raubseeschwalben sind mit einer Länge von 48 bis 55 cm etwas grösser als Sturmmöwen. Die Spannweite dieser grossen Seeschwalbenart geht von 96 bis 111 Zentimeter. Sie fliegen mit langsameren Flügelschlägen als andere Seeschwalben. Als besondere Kennzeichen haben sie einen kräftigen roten Schnabel, dunkelbraune Füsse und einen wenig gegabelten Schwanz. An der Flügelunterseite erscheinen die Handschwingen dunkel.
🇬🇧 With a length of 48 to 55 centimeters, Caspian terns are slightly larger than storm petrels. The wingspan of this large tern species ranges from 96 to 111 centimetres. They fly with slower wing beats than other terns. They are characterized by a strong red beak, dark brown feet and a slightly forked tail. The hand wings appear dark on the underside of the wings.

🇩🇪 Der Krauskopfpelikan verdankt seinen Namen den auffällig krausen Kopffedern. Zur Brutzeit ist sein Kehlsack rötlich gefärbt. Diese Pelikanart brütet an Binnenseen und Küstenlagunen Südosteuropas und Westasiens. Mit einer Spannweite um 3 m ist er ein sehr imposanter Vogel.
🇬🇧 The Dalmatian Pelican has conspicuous curly nape feathers. During the breeding season, its bill-pouch is reddish. This pelican species breeds on inland lakes and coastal lagoons of Southeast Europe and Western Asia. Its wingspan of approximately 3 m makes it a very impressive bird.

🇩🇪 Der Grauschnäpper hat eine unscheinbare Färbung und Stimme, weshalb er im Garten oft nicht bemerkt wird. Er sitzt gerne auf einer exponierten Warte und stürzt sich plötzlich in die Luft, um die erspähten Fliegen und anderen Fluginsekten zu erhaschen.
🇬🇧 The Spotted Flycatcher is of a plain colour and voice and is therefore often overlooked in the garden. It likes to sit on an exposed perch making sudden sallies to catch flies and other flying insects in the air.

🇩🇪 Vor allem kann man den Sperlingskauz in den Bergregionen antreffen, aber er ist auch teilweise bis ins Flachland verbreitet. Er brütet in Nadel- und Mischwäldern mit Altholzbeständen und Spechthöhlen, die er auch als Speisekammer nutzen kann.
🇬🇧 The pygmy owl is mainly found in mountainous regions, but is also found in some lowland areas. It breeds in coniferous and mixed forests with stands of old wood and woodpecker cavities, which it can also use as a larder.

🇩🇪 Rauchschwalben jagen Fluginsekten aller Art. Dabei richten sie sich nach dem lokalen Angebot und suchen die Regionen in der Luft aus, die dem Wetter entsprechend das günstigste Angebot bieten. Wenn sie mit Mehlschwalben zusammen jagen, dann im Luftraum unter diesen.
🇬🇧 Barn swallows hunt flying insects of all kinds. In doing so, they are guided by the local supply and seek out the regions in the air that offer the most favourable weather conditions. If they hunt together with house martins, they do so in the airspace below them.

🇩🇪 Der Sperlingskauz ist die kleinste Eule Europas. Trotz seiner geringen Grösse ist er sehr kräftig und kann grosse Drosseln erlegen. Das kleine «Teufelchen» wird nur selten entdeckt, obschon es tag- und dämmerungsaktiv ist. Im Frühjahr und Herbst macht es oft durch den Gesang auf sich aufmerksam. Der Sperlingskauz sitzt gerne auf einer Fichtenspitze, wobei er den Kopf schnell dreht und ruckartige Schwanzbewegungen ausführt.
🇬🇧 The Eurasian Pygmy-owl is the smallest owl in Europe. Despite its small size, it is very strong and able to kill large thrushes. The “little devil” is only rarely spotted, although it is diurnal and crepuscular. In spring and autumn it often attracts attention by its song. The Eurasian Pygmy-owl often perches on spruce tops where it turns its head quickly and moves its tail jerkily.

🇩🇪 Sommergoldhähnchen trifft man in Laub- und Mischwäldern an, wo sie viel in den Baumkronen, aber auch in niedrigeren Büschen und Sträuchern unterwegs sind. In Parks und Gärten sieht man sie häufiger als Wintergoldhähnchen, da sie weniger an Nadelbäume gebunden sind. Das Sommergoldhähnchen ist in unseren Breiten ein Zugvogel. Das Wintergoldhähnchen hingegen bleibt im Winter und zieht nicht ab.
🇬🇧 Summer goldcrests can be found in deciduous and mixed forests, where they are often found in the treetops, but also in lower bushes and shrubs. They are more common in parks and gardens than goldcrests, as they are less dependent on conifers. The goldcrest is a migratory bird in our latitudes. The goldcrest, on the other hand, stays in winter and does not migrate.

🇩🇪 Das Jahr 2024 war die bisher beste Brutsaison seit Beginn der Wiederansiedlung der Bartgeier im Alpenraum. 61 Junggeier sind in den Alpen ausgeflogen, davon 24 in der Schweiz, 17 in Frankreich, 14 in Italien und 6 in Österreich. Besonders erfreulich aus Schweizer Sicht ist auch der Umstand, dass zwei neue Brutpaare, eines im Wallis und eines im Kanton Bern, erstmals ein Jungtier aufziehen konnten.
🇬🇧 2024 was the best breeding season since the reintroduction of bearded vultures to the Alps began. 61 young vultures fledged in the Alps, 24 of them in Switzerland, 17 in France, 14 in Italy and 6 in Austria. Particularly pleasing from a Swiss perspective is the fact that two new breeding pairs, one in Valais and one in the canton of Bern, were able to raise a young for the first time.

🇩🇪 Den Schwarzmilan findet man häufig in Waldgebieten mit Seen oder Flüssen oder in der Nähe von Feuchtgebieten. Für die Jagd hält er sich in offenen Landschaften auf. Die Ernährung ist vielseitig und opportunistisch. Zum Beispiel greift er lebende oder tote Fische von der Wasseroberfläche mit den Krallen auf.
🇬🇧 The black kite is often found in wooded areas with lakes or rivers or near wetlands. For hunting, it stays in open landscapes. Its diet is varied and opportunistic. For example, it picks up live or dead fish from the surface of the water with its claws.

🇩🇪 Auf dem Speiseplan des Teichrohrsängers stehen Weichtiere, Spinnen, Insekten und Larven. Der Teichrohrsänger überwintert im tropischen Afrika und zieht im Herbst dorthin. Rückkehr ist Ende April.
🇬🇧 The reed warbler`s diet includes molluscs, spiders, insects and larvae. The reed warbler overwinters in tropical Africa and migrates there in autumn. It returns at the end of April.

🇩🇪 Happy Friday! Die Farbenpracht des Bienenfressers wirkt exotisch, denn kaum ein Brutvogel hat bei uns ein so buntes Gefieder. Der Bienenfresser jagt nicht nur Bienen, sondern auch andere fliegende Insekten. Zum Überwintern zieht er in den Süden Afrikas.

🇩🇪 Die Blaumeise ist wohl jedem schon mal begegnet. Sie ist auch in unseren Gärten zu Gast, sobald dort ein paar ältere Bäume stehen. Außerdem hält sie sich gerne in Scharen an Futterplätzen auf. Man kann bei ihnen sogar eine regelrechte Routine beobachten, bei der die Tageszeit und die Abfolge der Futterstellen in etwa gleich bleiben. Am Futterhäuschen fallen Blaumeisen oft durch ein freches Verhalten auf und geraten hin und wieder in kleine Streitereien mit anderen Vogelarten.
🇬🇧 Everyone has probably encountered the blue tit. It is also a guest in our gardens as soon as there are a few older trees. They also like to flock to feeding places. You can even observe a real routine with them, where the time of day and the sequence of feeding places remain roughly the same. At the feeders, blue tits are often conspicuous for their cheeky behaviour and occasionally get into small fights with other bird species.

🇩🇪 Die jungen Eisvögel haben oberseits dunkelbraun gefärbte Füße. Das Gefieder ist matter und die Oberseite grünlicher als bei Altvögeln. Die Brustfedern haben fast immer grünliche oder graue Spitzen. Der Schnabel ist ziemlich kurz und schwarz und zeigt einen hellen Fleck an der Spitze. Dieser immature Eisvogel hat schon eine grossen Fisch erbeutet! Es dauerte gute 10 Minuten, bis er seine Beute runtergeschluckt hatte.
🇬🇧 The young kingfishers have dark brown coloured feet on the upper side. The plumage is duller and the upper side is greener than in adult birds. The breast feathers almost always have greenish or grey tips. The bill is fairly short and black with a light-coloured spot at the tip. This immature kingfisher has already caught a large fish! It took him a good 10 minutes to swallow his prey.

🇩🇪 Die Zwergdommel ist ein scheuer Vogel, der tag- und dämmerungsaktiv ist. Er fliegt ungern auf, streicht dann meist niedrig über das Schilf und fällt nach kurzer Flugstrecke meist wieder in Deckung ein. Üblicherweise erstarrt er ähnlich wie die Rohrdommel bei Störung in einer Pfahlstellung, in der die Tarnung der schilfgelb und braun gestrichelten Brust zum Tragen kommt.

🇩🇪 Das Nahrungsspektrum des Eichelhähers ist sehr umfangreich, wobei meist das jahreszeitliche Angebot ausgenutzt wird. Von Frühjahr bis Herbst überwiegt daher der tierische Anteil. Als pflanzliche Nahrung werden Eicheln bevorzugt, aber auch andere Nussfrüchte wie Bucheckern, Haselnüsse und Edelkastanien werden genutzt. Der Eichelhäher sammelt und versteckt Wintervorräte. Dabei kann er bis zu zehn Eicheln in seinem Kropf transportieren.

Acorns are favoured as plant food, but other nut fruits such as beechnuts, hazelnuts and sweet chestnuts are also used. The jay collects and hides winter supplies. 🇩🇪 Der Stelzenläufer lebt in Flachwasserzonen mit Süss-, Brack- oder Salzwasser in Lagunen, Salinen und Steppenseen. Seine langen Beine erlauben die Nahrungssuche in tiefem Wasser. Er kommt hauptsächlich im Süden Mitteleuropas, am Kaspischen und Schwarzen Meer und in der Türkei vor. Teilweise stösst er jedoch zur Brut auch in den Norden Mitteleuropas vor. Es gibt Brutpopulationen in Nordfrankreich und an der westlichen Donau. Der Stelzenläufer ist ein Langstreckenzieher und überwintert in Afrika.
🇬🇧 The black-winged stilt lives in shallow water zones with fresh, brackish or salt water in lagoons, salt pans and steppe lakes. Its long legs allow it to forage in deep water. It is mainly found in southern Central Europe, the Caspian and Black Seas and Turkey. However, it sometimes also breeds in the north of Central Europe. There are breeding populations in northern France and on the western Danube. The black-winged stilt is a long-distance migrant and winters in Africa.
